According to the National Eczema Association (NEA), over 31 million Americans suffer from some form of eczema. This skin condition causes itchy, inflamed skin and can be recognized by its dry skin, rashes, scaly patches, blisters, or skin infections. Eczema is common in children, adolescents, and adults all of whom may suffer from different types of eczema such as atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, dyshidrotic eczema, nummular eczema, seborrheic dermatitis and stasis dermatitis.
It’s important to note, that eczema is not contagious. This skin condition can occur at any moment in one’s life. The NEA has concluded that individuals who have eczema have environmental triggers that interact with one’s genes or biological makeup.
It’s possible for people with eczema to experience one or more acute symptoms at a time, thus, causing a “flare-up” of symptoms that may lead to discomfort.
At Dr. Oscar Sotelo’s Dermatology Center, he and his team are happy to serve patients who find themselves suffering from Eczema.
What are the causes of Eczema?
The NEA reports that the exact cause of eczema is unknown, however, when an allergen comes into contact with one’s immune system, the body reacts with inflammation on the surface of the skin. This is also known as atopic dermatitis or atopic eczema, which is considered the most common type of eczema.
Researchers also believe an individual’s genetic component correlates with their experience with this skin condition. The body produces a protein called “filaggrin,” which aids the body to maintain skin moisture. When the body is not producing enough filaggrin, it may lead to dry and itchy skin.
Eczema flare-ups can also be triggered from one’s stress level, per the NEA.
However, everyday household products may also contribute to one’s allergic reactions and flare-ups such as:
- Certain types of body soaps, face washes, hair products (Shampoos and lotions with Cocamidopropyl betaine)
- Laundry detergents & fabric softeners
- Disinfectant cleaners, such as ones with formaldehyde
- Fragranced candles
- Antibacterial personal care products with isothiazolinone
What are the symptoms of Eczema?
Eczema is experienced differently by everyone, so not everyone who suffers from the skin condition will have the same symptoms. Even those who have had eczema as a child or adolescent may have different symptoms as an adult.
It’s essential to remember that eczema is different from psoriasis, with eczema there is always an itchy component.
According to the NEA, eczema can also appear different on the skin depending on one’s skin tone. For lighter skin, the skin appears red. While people of color may see their skin appear as ashen or grey skin, darker brown or purple.
Symptoms include:
- Itchy or dry skin
- Inflamed and discolored skin
- Rough, scaly skin, that appears in patches
- Swelling
